NOVA YORK - Investigadores federais prenderam um enigmático aplicador de Wall Street acusado de ter acesso a informações internas e privilegiadas. E, incrivelmente, ele alega ser um viajante do tempo do ano 2256.

Fontes da Comissão de Segurança confirmam que Andrew Carlssin, de 44 anos, ofereceu esta bizarra explicação para seu incrível sucesso no mercado de ações, após ser levado algemado em 28 de janeiro. "Não acreditamos na história desse cara - ou ele é um lunático ou um mentiroso patológico", disse um membro da Comissão.

Mas o fato é que, com um investimento inicial de apenas 800 dólares, em duas semanas ele tinha um portfólio avaliado em 350 milhões de dólares. Toda transação que ele fez deu lucros, em área inesperada dos negócios, o que não pode ser simplesmente sorte.

Ele só pode ter conseguido através de informações internas ilegais. Ele vai ficar sentado em uma cela na Ilha Riker até concordar em divulgar suas fontes". Quando investigadores pressionaram Carlssin durante o interrogatório, foram surpreendidos por uma confissão que durou quatro horas.
Carlssin declarou que viajou de volta no tempo a partir de 200 anos no futuro e que seu conhecimento dessa era lhe permitiu acumular a fortuna que obteve. "Era tentador demais para resistir", teria dito Carlssin durante a confissão, que foi gravada em video-tape. Para provar que estava falando a verdade, Carlssin se ofereceu para falar sobre "fatos históricos" como a cura da AIDS e o real esconderijo de Osama Bin Laden. Tudo o que ele quer é que permitam que volte ao futuro em sua "nave temporal". Mas ele se recusa a revelar a localização da máquina ou falar como ela funciona, supostamente com medo de que a tecnologia "caia em mãos erradas".

O mais intrigante é que os agentes ainda não encontraram nenhum registro existente sobre qualquer Andrew Carlssin antes de dezembro de 2002.

one need know about this article is that it originated with the Weekly World News, an entertainment tabloid devoted to inventing fantastically fictitious stories while keeping its tongue firmly embedded in its cheek to a depth not measurable by any instrument known to man. Unfortunately, Yahoo!, a primary news source for many people on the Internet, reprints some Weekly World News articles in their TV News section under a heading of "Entertainment News & Gossip," a title that doesn't convey a strong "bogus" warning to readers who don't notice the original source is the Weekly World News (or don't know what the Weekly World News is).

Despite this item's tabloid origins (and the fact that it was covered nowhere but in the Weekly World News), it has showed up in a variety of magazines and newspapers, reprinted verbatim as a "real" news item -- to the amusement and consternation of FBI and U.S. Security and Exchange Commission officials, who have been flooded with a rash of inquiries from journalists seeking confirmation for a bit of fiction:

The spokesman at the US Security and Exchange Commission in Washington gives a weary sigh and then a slightly strained chuckle when he hears the words "time traveller" and "inside trader".

"This story is pure fantasy. There is no truth in it at all," he says. "This is the kind of story that belongs in the same file as 'Elvis Shrine Found on Mars.'

"You know something? We have had an enormous number of calls from the media on this one. It has been absolutely amazing. Of course, we had to look into it, but as far as we know, it’s just not true."

As if this tale weren't already implausible enough on its face, the Edinburgh Evening News wryly noted:

"Even a non-time traveller could have told him that profiting from 126 consecutive high-risk trades over two weeks was sure to get him noticed," commented the Guardian.

A handful of others pointed out that any time traveller with half a brain would not bother popping back to 2003, just when the stock market is in free fall and anyone who actually makes any money at all would stick out like a 25-ft. tall green alien with two heads.

In a follow-up article in their 29 April 2003 issue, the Weekly World News reported that mysterious time-traveling Andrew Carlssin had been bailed out by an "unidentified benefactor" who ponied up $1 million, then jumped bail before an April 3 court hearing and disappeared without a trace.

E deixa instruções detalhadas sobre o que fazer com o dinheiro pelos próximos 50 anos. O investimento deveria ser mantido em segredo absoluto. Cinquenta anos depois ele volta e dá novas instruções e assim vai, com o dinheiro crescendo até representar a totalidade da economia mundial (embora ninguém soubesse), até que a coisa é descoberta no século XX e as pessoas se dão conta de que 500 anos de história mundial foram dirigidos por um único homem.

Passado ou futuro são inatingíveis.
