Has anyone ever been revived?

A: No adult human has ever been revived from temperatures far below freezing. Cryonics patients are cared for in the expectation that future technology, especially molecular nanotechnology, will be available to reverse the cryonics process. This technology may become a reality a century or more in the future.

A: Cryonics is ideally begun at the moment the heart stops beating (cardiac arrest). This permits legal death to be declared so that cryonics procedures can begin without the legal restrictions of procedures performed on people that are legally alive. The distinction, however, is purely legal. Blood circulation and oxygenation are artificially restored in cryonics patients so that under ideal conditions their blood chemistry and blood gases (oxygen, carbon dioxide, pH) cannot be distinguished from that of a legally living person. Cryonics patients are therefore legally dead, but biologically alive.


Q: Isn't the preservation process fatal?

A: Cold preservation (cryopreservation) is not yet reversible with present technology, but this does not mean it is fatal. Cryonics requires special consideration because the patients are being transported to future medicine. For the same reason that paramedics are not allowed to make determinations of death until a victim is seen by a doctor at a hospital, it is not appropriate to say cryonics patients are dead simply because doctors today cannot revive them. They must reach their intended destination before a valid determination of death can be made. Definitions of death change as medical technologies advance, and the conditions that future medicine will regard as "death" are very different from what we consider death today.
