Previous Neurobiological Study of Holocaust Survivors
To THE EDITOR: In their valuable article on long-term effects of the Holocaust experience, Rachel Yehuda, Ph.D., and colleagues state that to their knowledge, their study“ represents the first neurobiological study of Holocaust survivors”
( 1 ). Readers of the Journal may he interested to learn, or perhaps he reminded, that in 1948 Klebanow reported a higher incidence of birth defects in babies born to mothers who had undergone the severe hunger and psychological stress of being in German concentration camps during World War II (2). Among the 1,430 babies born to these women,
4% had a major birth defect, whereas in the same obstetrical clinic
only I % of babies horn to women who had not undergone such stress had such birth defects. Among the 1,430 babies of the Holocaust survivors, 1 2 had Down’s syndrome,
which is a prevalence rate of 0.8%; the expected prevalence rate of Down’s syndrome in Kbehanow’s clinic at that time was only one case in 6,000-7,000 births,
or about 0.016%.
