Inventor do telefone celular quer aparelhos mais simples

MADRI, Espanha — O inventor do telefone celular, Martin Cooper, declarou nesta quarta-feira que os aparelhos atuais estão muito complicados, com uma série de aplicativos e recursos como câmera e música, em relação ao primeiro deles, criado há mais de três décadas.
"Quando se cria um aparelho universal que faz tudo para todos, não faz nada bem", disse Cooper, que trabalhou como pesquisador da Motorola, em uma conferência internacional sobre privacidade de dados em Madri.
"Acredito que nosso futuro seja uma série de aparelhos especializados focados em uma coisa que melhore nossas vidas", explicou Cooper, hoje com 80 anos de idade.
O americano era engenheiro chefe da Motorola quando desenvolveu o protótipo do telefone celular. Fez a primeira ligação com um aparelho sem fio em uma rua de Manhattan no dia 3 de abril de 1973.
"O primeiro modelo de telefone celular pesava um quilo e só era possível falar por 20 minutos antes que a bateria acabasse", contou.
"O que fizemos com este telefone foi criar uma revolução. Antes que o celular existisse, ligávamos para um lugar; agora ligamos para uma pessoa".
Desde a primeira ligação por celular, a popularidade dos aparelhos só aumentou, e hoje mais de quatro bilhões de pessoas possuem pelo menos um, segundo Cooper, contra apenas 300.000 em 1984.

Mobile Phone Inventor Feels Mobile Handsets Getting Way to Complex

Mobile handsets of today which boast a variety of features and convergence tools are getting way to complex to use, according to Martin Cooper who was instrumental in designing the first mobile phone at Motorola.
Speaking at a privacy conference in Madrid, Cooper argued that phones of today are getting difficult to use since they are attempting to do too many things at the same time and mentioned “Whenever you create a universal device that does all things for all people, it does not do any thing well.”
Today most phones do much more than just allow communication between two people and many have become mini computers in their own right and quite understandably they have become complex owing to their sophistication.
While Cooper may have a point about the increasing complexity of mobile phones that are entering the markets today, it is important to note that according to sales figures of mobile phones suggest that most customers these days prefer to go for handsets that are loaded with extensive a range of features.
The choice of customers can also be seen through the increasing sales of Smartphones which have skyrocketed over the past year while mobile handset sales across the same period have shown a poor growth trend.
